1888 Blessed Louis-Marie Grignion de Montfort Gilt Brass Figure
1888 Blessed Louis-Marie Grignion de Montfort Gilt Brass Figure
A late 19th-century French gilt brass devotional figure of Blessed Louis-Marie Grignion de Montfort, dated 1888, commemorating the year of his beatification by Pope Leo XIII. The figure is inscribed “B. Montfort” to the base and displays the date “1888,” firmly situating it within the immediate post-beatification devotional production of the period.
Montfort is depicted in clerical robes holding a crucifix and rosary, emblematic of his Marian spirituality and his promotion of the Rosary. The figure stands upon an ornate pierced Gothic revival plinth with scrolling ornamentation typical of French ecclesiastical metalwork of the late Victorian era. The casting remains well defined, particularly in the drapery and rosary detail, and retains much of its original gilt surface, now mellowed with age.
Cabinet-scale and well proportioned, this is a historically grounded devotional object suited to collectors of 19th-century religious artefacts, Gothic revival interiors, or ecclesiastical display.
