19th Century Chinese Bone-Inlaid Elm & Rosewood Cabinet, Ningbo Province
19th Century Chinese Bone-Inlaid Elm & Rosewood Cabinet, Ningbo Province
An authentic 19th-century Chinese cabinet from the Ningbo region, an important centre of furniture production during the Qing Dynasty.
The cabinet is constructed with an elmwood body, prized for its strength and subtle grain, combined with rosewood doors and drawer fronts, selected for their density, depth of colour, and durability. This deliberate use of contrasting timbers is characteristic of high-quality regional furniture from eastern China.
The rosewood panels are finely decorated with hand-cut bone inlay, depicting elegant birds and floral motifs arranged within framed reserves. These decorative compositions reflect traditional symbolism and craftsmanship associated with southern Chinese domestic furniture of the period.
The cabinet features two upper drawers fitted with shaped brass pulls, above a two-door cupboard section with original brass hardware and central locking plate. The piece retains a strong, practical form while offering a warm, rustic presence.
A beautifully aged surface patina has developed across the elm and rosewood, enhancing the depth and authenticity of the piece. Both decorative and functional, it lends itself well to layered interiors, collectors’ settings, or refined contemporary spaces.
