19th Century Ethiopian Orthodox Processional Cross with Ge’ez Script
19th Century Ethiopian Orthodox Processional Cross with Ge’ez Script
A substantial 19th century Ethiopian Orthodox processional cross of impressive scale and sculptural presence, hand-cut and engraved with Ge’ez or Amharic ecclesiastical script in the Lalibela and Gondarine tradition.
The cross features pierced quatrefoil terminals, layered cruciform motifs and an elongated latticework handle, all executed by hand with visible irregularities that add to its devotional and ceremonial character. The pale metal surface retains a beautifully aged patina with darker oxidation settled into the engraved decoration and inscriptions.
Objects of this type occupied an important role within Ethiopian Orthodox liturgical practice, carried during religious ceremonies and processions or used as symbolic devotional objects. Beyond its ecclesiastical origins, the piece possesses a striking brutalist and architectural quality, making it equally compelling as a wall-mounted sculptural object within contemporary or traditional interiors.
An unusually large and visually powerful example with strong decorative impact.
