19th Century Indian Bronze Changalvetta Ritual Oil Lamp
19th Century Indian Bronze Changalvetta Ritual Oil Lamp
This 19th-century Indian bronze Changalvetta is a finely proportioned ritual oil lamp traditionally used in Hindu puja and temple ceremonies. Cast in bronze with a warm, aged patina, the lamp features an elongated horizontal body with a central oil reservoir, flanked by shallow offering dishes and terminating in a stylised fishtail form.
A linked wick spoon remains attached by its original chain, an essential functional element used to tend the flame during extended ritual use. The form balances practical design with symbolic presence, reflecting South Indian metalwork traditions where ritual objects were both utilitarian and devotional in nature.
Today, pieces such as this Changalvetta are equally appreciated as sculptural objects, well suited to display within curated interiors or collections focused on ritual and cultural artefacts.
