This 19th-century bronze opium weight is cast in the form of a stylised horse, an unusual and visually distinctive variant within Southeast Asian opium weights. Attributed to the Shan cultural sphere, the piece demonstrates confident sculptural modelling, with exaggerated musculature and incised linear detailing that has softened through prolonged handling and use.

The bronze surface exhibits a deep, dark patina with warm highlights to raised areas, characteristic of a copper-rich alloy rather than modern brass. The incised lines show natural erosion, and the base displays abrasion consistent with repeated contact over many years. These features are difficult to replicate convincingly and support the authenticity of the piece as a genuine functional weight rather than a later decorative reproduction.

Horse-form opium weights are notably scarcer than avian or lion types, making this example particularly appealing to collectors. Its compact scale and sculptural presence also allow it to function effectively as a standalone decorative object, bridging ethnographic interest and aesthetic appeal.
