Antique Painted Mirror in the Manner of 17th Century Stumpwork Decoration
Antique Painted Mirror in the Manner of 17th Century Stumpwork Decoration
A large and highly decorative painted mirror frame, conceived in the manner of 17th-century English stumpwork panels. The surface is richly illustrated with a central seated female musician holding a stringed instrument, surrounded by a series of narrative vignettes incorporating animals, birds, insects, flowering plants and stylised architectural forms.
The arrangement reflects the compartmental storytelling typical of early stumpwork embroidery, where figures, fauna and symbolic elements are organised within a structured border. Here, that visual language is translated into painted decoration, creating a bold and unusual reinterpretation of the earlier textile tradition.
Animals including a lion, deer and birds appear alongside butterflies, a centipede and stylised flora, contributing to a layered, almost folkloric composition. The architectural scenes, though naïve in execution, reinforce the decorative and narrative intent of the piece.
The frame itself is entirely formed from solid wood, with shaped and moulded sections cut in timber rather than applied or composite construction, giving it a notable weight and presence. The mirror reads strongly as a statement interior piece, combining scale, texture and visual interest.
While not an original 17th-century object, it remains a compelling decorative work rooted in historical design influence.
