Large Mid-Century Bessarabian Rose Kilim – Floral Handwoven Rug (312x175cm)
Large Mid-Century Bessarabian Rose Kilim – Floral Handwoven Rug (312x175cm)
This large mid-20th century Bessarabian rose kilim is woven in the traditional flatweave tapestry technique and originates from the historic region of Bessarabia — an area encompassing parts of present-day Moldova, Romania, and Ukraine. These richly coloured floral kilims became particularly sought after for their bold drawing and dramatic scale, combining Eastern European weaving tradition with a decorative aesthetic influenced by European textile design.
The design features oversized cabbage roses and scrolling foliage set against a deep black ground, framed by a stylised floral border. The saturated pinks, reds, turquoise-greens and ochres create strong visual contrast, giving the piece a confident, architectural presence suited to large interior spaces. The drawing is balanced and symmetrical, typical of workshop production from the mid-20th century when these kilims were woven in larger formats for export and formal interiors.
Woven entirely in wool using the flatweave kilim technique, the surface has a firm handle and lies flat, making it practical for use as a room-sized rug or as a striking wall textile. The scale of the floral motifs and the generous proportions make this particularly suitable for dining rooms, studios, gallery-style interiors or layered decorative schemes.
Bessarabian rose kilims remain highly regarded for their distinctive palette and decorative impact. While earlier 19th and early 20th century examples were often village-woven, larger mid-century workshop pieces such as this reflect the continued evolution of the tradition and its appeal to European and Western markets.
A bold and characterful statement textile with strong decorative presence.
