Antique Himalayan Painted Wooden Trunk Elephant Iron Bound Chest
Antique Himalayan Painted Wooden Trunk Elephant Iron Bound Chest
A late 19th to early 20th century Himalayan painted wooden trunk, likely originating from the Tibetan or Nepalese region.
Constructed in plank wood and bound with original hand-forged iron straps, this piece was designed for practical storage and transport. The surface is decorated with hand-incised and pigment-filled designs, featuring stylised elephants, mythical creatures and scrolling foliage, set against a warm lacquered ground that has worn beautifully over time.
The decoration reflects a vernacular workshop tradition, where Chinese-influenced motifs are interpreted in a more expressive and less formal manner. Areas of abrasion and pigment loss contribute to a layered, authentic patina, giving the piece strong visual depth and character.
Compact in scale yet visually impactful, it works well as a decorative storage piece, console-top chest or interior accent within layered and eclectic spaces.
