Antique Hoshiarpur Inlaid Folding Octagonal Table Punjab India c.1900
Antique Hoshiarpur Inlaid Folding Octagonal Table Punjab India c.1900
A finely detailed antique folding occasional table from Hoshiarpur in Punjab, India, dating to the late nineteenth to early twentieth century.
The octagonal top is richly decorated with a central rosette design formed from intricate scrolling vine motifs inlaid in brass. The surface is densely worked in the traditional Hoshiarpur manner, where fine engraved metal inlay is set into dark hardwood to create highly decorative, continuous patterns with minimal empty space.
The table stands on a folding octagonal base composed of hinged panels, each decorated with geometric star motifs and small brass inlays. Moorish arch cut-outs to the lower sections add a sculptural quality while maintaining the functional folding design, allowing the table to collapse into a compact form.
Furniture of this type was produced in Hoshiarpur for both local use and export during the late Victorian and early twentieth century period, forming part of the Anglo-Indian decorative arts tradition.
A versatile and decorative piece suitable as a side table, lamp table or display stand, and highly compatible with eclectic and globally influenced interiors.
