Antique Indian Betel Nut (Paan) Set Copper Box with Spice Containers
Antique Indian Betel Nut (Paan) Set Copper Box with Spice Containers
A substantial and complete antique Indian betel (paan) set, comprising a large domed copper container with fitted internal tray and a full arrangement of lidded spice boxes.
Traditionally used in the preparation and serving of paan, these sets held the various elements required for betel chewing, including areca nut, spices, and lime. One of the containers still retains traces of lime, offering a direct and tangible link to its original function.
The exterior is richly decorated with hand-chased floral medallions set against a finely punched ground, a technique widely associated with North Indian metalworking traditions. The domed lid is fitted with a robust handle and original chain fastening system, allowing the container to be securely closed. Inside, the fitted tray and individual containers are all hand-formed, each displaying subtle irregularities that reflect their handmade construction.
The surface has developed a deep, atmospheric patina, with areas of oxidation and wear that enhance its visual depth. Both sculptural and functional in origin, the piece translates particularly well into an interior setting, working equally as a centrepiece or as part of a curated collection of South Asian metalwork.
A complete and increasingly scarce example of traditional paan culture, offering both historical context and strong decorative appeal.
