Antique Indian / Sri Lankan Brass Oil Lamp with Hintha Bird Finial, c.1900
Antique Indian / Sri Lankan Brass Oil Lamp with Hintha Bird Finial, c.1900
A finely proportioned antique brass oil lamp of South Asian origin, surmounted by a stylised hintha bird finial — a form closely associated with Sri Lankan and South Indian ritual lighting traditions.
The lamp is constructed with a turned central column rising from a wide, stable circular base, supporting a lobed drip tray designed to hold multiple oil wicks. The tray retains visible signs of historic use, with natural darkening and residue consistent with repeated lighting. Above, the hintha bird is crisply cast, with defined feathering, curved neck, and raised posture, lending the piece a strong sculptural presence.
The combination of cast and lathe-turned elements, along with the restrained stamped detailing, places this example within a functional rather than purely decorative context. The surface has developed a rich, even patina, undisturbed by modern polishing, reinforcing its early 20th century or late 19th century origin.
A substantial and visually balanced piece, well suited to interior placement as a statement object or within a curated collection of South Asian ritual metalwork.
