Antique Javanese Teak Daybed Bench with Drawers, Dutch East Indies c.1900
Antique Javanese Teak Daybed Bench with Drawers, Dutch East Indies c.1900
A late 19th to early 20th century Javanese teak daybed bench of colonial Dutch East Indies origin, constructed in solid teak with a restrained and architectural presence. The piece is formed with shaped end panels acting as low head and footboards, and a deep front rail fitted with three drawers, each retaining its original iron ring pull handles.
The design reflects a practical domestic object, combining seating, storage and occasional sleeping use, typical of veranda and interior furniture in colonial-era Java. The proportions are deliberately low and grounded, with thick plank construction and a weighty, durable feel that speaks to its utilitarian origins rather than later decorative export production.
The surface shows a well-aged patina to the teak, with variation in tone across the top and front panels, consistent with long-term use and careful cleaning over time. The iron hardware remains simple and functional, reinforcing the authenticity of the piece.
This is a strong, honest example of early Indonesian colonial furniture, offering both functional use and decorative presence, particularly suited to interior designers seeking grounded, textural pieces with genuine age.
Dimensions
Approx. Length: 58 inches (147.3 cm) Width: 23 inches (58.4 cm) Height: 34 inches (86.4 cm).
Condition
Structurally sound and stable. There has been a historic split to one end panel, typical of aged teak, which has been stabilised using wood resin. The split did not fully separate and has been securely rejoined; a faint line remains visible on close inspection but does not detract from the overall integrity or use of the piece. General surface wear, marks and tonal variation consistent with age and use. Drawers function as expected for a piece of this period, and original iron hardware remains intact.
