Antique South Indian Bronze Horse-Head Oil Lamp (Vilakku) Kerala c.1900
Antique South Indian Bronze Horse-Head Oil Lamp (Vilakku) Kerala c.1900
A compact South Indian bronze oil lamp (vilakku) cast with a distinctive arched handle terminating in a stylised horse’s head. Produced in Kerala or the adjoining regions of western Tamil Nadu, this form was intended for domestic shrine use, where small lamps of this type were lit daily for puja rituals using coconut or sesame oil with a cotton wick.
The lamp is cast as a single piece with a shallow circular reservoir and thick rim designed to support a wick. The sculptural handle rises from the body in a fluid S-curve, culminating in an expressive zoomorphic finial with elongated muzzle and upright ears, clearly representing a horse rather than the more commonly encountered Nandi bull. Horse imagery in South Indian ritual arts is associated with protective village deities, processional symbolism, and martial or royal connotations.
Surface wear, soot accretion, and the deep blackened patina testify to sustained functional use over many years. The interior shows irregularities from hand finishing after casting, while the exterior retains the robust character typical of utilitarian bronzes produced for household rather than temple contexts. Pieces of this scale were commonly placed on a small altar or within a niche shrine.
Examples of this type are sometimes described in the trade as “Ikka Dukka” lamps, a colloquial designation rather than a formal art-historical classification. The present example is best understood simply as a South Indian zoomorphic vilakku dating to the late nineteenth or early twentieth century.
A characterful and authentic ritual object, equally suited to devotional display, interior decoration, or inclusion within a collection of South Asian metalwork.
Dimensions: 10 cm diameter; 9.5 cm height; weight 300 g.
Condition: Structurally sound with heavy historic soot deposits, surface wear, casting irregularities, and age-consistent patina. No visible cracks or repairs observed.
