Chinese Green & Cobalt Peking Style Overlay Glass Vase with Mask Handles c.1930–1960
Chinese Green & Cobalt Peking Style Overlay Glass Vase with Mask Handles c.1930–1960
A striking Chinese Peking-style overlay glass vase featuring a vivid green ground beneath deep cobalt-blue overlay decoration. The vase has a rounded square body with softly curved corners, divided into four relief panels depicting birds among flowering branches set against a finely textured geometric diaper ground.
The tall cylindrical neck is decorated with stylised mask handles holding suspended rings, an archaising motif inspired by ancient Chinese bronze ritual vessels. The contrasting cobalt overlay has been cut back to reveal the luminous green body beneath, creating a sculptural effect across the decorative panels.
The glass itself contains scattered gold-coloured aventurine inclusions, which produce subtle sparkling highlights within the body of the material when the piece catches the light.
Pieces of this type were produced during the early to mid-20th century as part of a revival of traditional Chinese decorative motifs for the export decorative market and remain highly appealing display objects today.
