A substantial early twentieth-century Sri Lankan bronze depicting the Buddha in the sacred Parinirvana pose, reclining peacefully upon an ornamental couch with his head supported by a cylindrical cushion. Representing the Buddha's final passing into Parinirvana, this iconic form remains one of the most important and recognisable images within Buddhist art.
Cast in unusually heavy bronze for its size, the sculpture displays a pleasing sense of solidity and quality. The figure is finely detailed with tightly curled hair, a serene contemplative expression and carefully incised robe folds flowing across the body. The decorative couch terminates in elegant scrolling ends and retains engraved ornament to the apron beneath.
Particularly appealing is the rich, aged patina and the evident devotional wear visible to the face, shoulder and raised folds of the robe. These naturally polished areas are consistent with decades of handling and reverence, lending the piece an authenticity often absent from later decorative castings. The underside retains an old dealer's label identifying the figure as Sri Lankan and dating it to the early twentieth century.
Although compact in scale, the considerable weight and quality of casting give the sculpture a strong presence. It would make an excellent addition to a collection of Buddhist art, Asian bronzes or a thoughtfully curated interior.
