Large Antique Indian Copper Betel Nut Box (Paan Daan) with Internal Set, c.1900
Large Antique Indian Copper Betel Nut Box (Paan Daan) with Internal Set, c.1900
A substantial and highly decorative antique Indian betel nut box, or paan daan, dating to the late 19th to early 20th century. Hand-worked in copper with a fully tinned interior, the piece is fitted with a domed lid, cast bronze handle, and original chain supports, all retaining a rich, aged patina consistent with prolonged use.
Internally, the box retains its original configuration, including multiple lidded containers used for storing lime, areca nut, and associated condiments. Traces of lime residue remain visible, reinforcing its authentic domestic use within traditional betel preparation rituals. The scale of the piece is notably larger than most surviving examples, suggesting use within a well-appointed household or for communal serving.
The restrained exterior, combined with the weight and presence of the form, gives this piece strong decorative appeal. It sits comfortably within both interior design contexts and serious collections of South Asian metalwork, offering both historical function and visual impact.
