Large Persian Engraved Brass Tray Wall Charger 58cm Qajar Figural c.1900
Large Persian Engraved Brass Tray Wall Charger 58cm Qajar Figural c.1900
A substantial Persian engraved brass tray of impressive scale, richly decorated in the Qajar revival manner with figural medallions, dense foliate arabesques, and stylised calligraphic bands. The piece is most likely produced in the late Qajar to early Pahlavi transitional period, circa 1890–1930, reflecting a moment where traditional Persian decorative arts absorbed increasing European influence in both composition and figural style.
The composition centres on a circular medallion of intertwined animals within a highly detailed floral ground, surrounded by a series of roundels depicting seated female figures—an important indicator of this transitional period. These figures, rendered in a stylised yet distinctly figurative manner, sit within scrolling floral reserves and are framed by continuous bands of engraved ornament and pseudo-calligraphy, creating a layered and highly rhythmic surface.
The engraving is finely executed across the entire field, with virtually no empty ground, demonstrating workshop production intended for decorative display rather than utilitarian use. The raised, scalloped rim with repeating engraved panels enhances its presence, giving the piece strong visual impact when wall-mounted.
Such trays were produced in centres such as Isfahan and Shiraz, often for export markets, combining traditional Persian motifs with more accessible figural decoration suited to Western interiors. The reverse retains its original surface with age-related oxidation, and includes a hanger for wall display.
