Large South Indian Carved Wooden Horse Sculpture – Tamil Nadu Votive Figure

A large and striking South Indian carved wooden horse from Tamil Nadu, most likely produced in the early to mid-20th century in the tradition of Ayyanar guardian horses. Figures of this type were associated with rural shrine offerings made to the village guardian deity Ayyanar, where horses symbolised protection and strength.

This example is hand carved from a dense hardwood, likely teak or a related tropical timber, giving the piece considerable weight and presence. The horse retains worn polychrome decoration with painted harness and saddle detailing, now softened through age and handling. The stylised facial features, carved mane, and distinctive ceremonial saddle pad are characteristic of South Indian folk carving.

At approximately 80 cm in height, the piece has impressive sculptural scale and reads beautifully as a decorative statement object. Objects of this type are highly sought after by interior designers for their ability to introduce form, texture, and cultural narrative into a space.
