A substantial South Indian carved hardwood shrine panel depicting Lord Murugan (Kartikeya / Skanda), the Tamil god of war and victory, standing upon his peacock mount and flanked by his consorts Valli and Devasena.

The central figure is clearly identified by the vel (spear) held upright in his left hand — the principal and unmistakable attribute of Murugan. Beneath him stands the peacock, Paravani, his sacred vehicle. To either side stand his two consorts: Valli, often associated with the earthly and pastoral realm and here holding a small ritual vessel, and Devasena, his celestial bride, rendered with more formal ornamentation.

The entire scene is framed within a temple-style architectural canopy, echoing South Indian vimana forms, with dense relief carving throughout. Beneath the platform are protective yali or makara-like mythological guardians, a motif deeply rooted in Dravidian temple sculpture. The lower section is supported by scrolling legs carved with further mythic beasts and vegetal motifs, creating a visually powerful vertical composition.

The carving is executed in dense hardwood, likely teak or a comparable South Indian timber, with deep undercutting and strong shadow play across the surface. The patina and carving style suggest early to mid 20th-century workshop production, made for domestic devotional or decorative use rather than temple architectural salvage.

A striking statement piece suited to interior designers, collectors of Indian religious art, or those building a shrine-inspired interior scheme.
