Pair 19th Century Orientalist Spelter Figural Candlesticks 40cm
Pair 19th Century Orientalist Spelter Figural Candlesticks 40cm
A striking and sculptural pair of late 19th century Orientalist figural candlesticks, cast in spelter and retaining extensive traces of original cold-painted decoration and parcel gilding. Each figure is depicted in dynamic forward motion, one male and one female, dressed in richly detailed pseudo-Middle Eastern costume, holding aloft a hexagonal torch-form candle sconce.
The modelling is expressive and theatrical. The female figure wears a draped skirt with patterned apron and jewelled headwrap; the male figure wears a turban with plume, open vest, and bead necklace. Both stand balanced on one advancing foot upon circular bases cast with floral and foliate ornament. The surfaces display honest age-related wear, with attractive patination and areas of rubbing to the gilding and paint consistent with 19th century spelter examples.
These are not later reproductions. The casting quality, weight distribution, cold-painted finish and underside construction strongly indicate Continental manufacture, most probably French, circa 1870–1890, produced during the height of the Orientalist decorative movement.
At 40 cm high, they make dramatic interior statements and function equally well as decorative sculptures or practical candle supports.
An increasingly desirable category among collectors of Victorian eclecticism and interior designers seeking authentic 19th century narrative pieces.
Dimensions
Height: approx. 40 cm
Base Diameter: approx. 12 cm
Combined Weight: approx. 1.4 kg
Condition
Overall structurally sound and display-ready. There is age-related wear consistent with late 19th century spelter, including surface rubbing, losses to the original polychrome and gilt finish, and general patination throughout, all of which are in keeping with period examples. The female figure’s raised right hand has a natural casting join at the wrist (peg and socket construction), which has been resecured with a small amount of adhesive; this join is visible on close inspection but is stable and does not affect structural integrity. No other major cracks or breaks noted. The sconces show expected wear internally from use. Please review photographs carefully as they form part of the description.
