Pair of Early 20th Century Polychrome Figural Candlesticks
Pair of Early 20th Century Polychrome Figural Candlesticks
A decorative pair of early 20th century European figural candlesticks in the historical Blackamoor tradition, each modelled as a standing attendant in a red turban, cream tunic and pale green breeches, raising a flower-form candle cup above the shoulder. The figures stand on turned circular bases with a dark bronze-tone finish and retain their polychrome painted decoration, giving the pair strong visual contrast and an unmistakably theatrical presence. More decorative than sculpturally refined, they sit comfortably within the interwar to mid-century taste for orientalist revival furnishings and work particularly well as a mantelpiece, console, or sideboard display. Sold as a true pair, they offer symmetry and strong interior design appeal, with the value lying chiefly in their decorative effect and period character rather than in fine foundry quality.
