Safavid Period Persian Copper Tray on Mid-Century Teak Wood Camel Saddle Stand
Safavid Period Persian Copper Tray on Mid-Century Teak Wood Camel Saddle Stand
This low table combines an early Persian copper tray with a later teak wood camel-saddle style stand, forming a visually strong and historically legible composite object. The tray is Safavid in character, likely dating to the late 17th or 18th century, with finely engraved vegetal bands and a central calligraphic roundel executed in relief against a densely worked ground. Originally tinned for functional use, the tinning has largely worn away on the face, remaining visible on the reverse and at the edges, consistent with age and long use.
The copper tray shows traditional hammering marks beneath the engraving, with a shallow, slightly dished profile and a narrow raised rim. The reverse displays areas of surviving tinning and a stamped emblem resembling a tughra or workshop mark. The engraving style and surface wear align with Persian domestic metalwork rather than later tourist production.
The stand is a mid-century piece inspired by camel saddle forms, constructed in hardwood with turned stretchers and capped feet. While later in date, it provides a stable and visually sympathetic base, allowing the tray to function as a low table or centrepiece. The combined piece works particularly well in interior settings, appealing to collectors and designers seeking historically grounded objects with strong sculptural presence.
