William James Müller Orientalist Watercolour Ottoman Gentleman Bristol School Signed
A 19th-century Orientalist watercolour portrait by William James Müller (1812–1845), a leading figure of the Bristol School.
The composition depicts an Ottoman gentleman wearing a large wrapped turban with coloured bands and a full beard, set against a softly rendered mountainous landscape. Müller travelled extensively in the Near East, and works of this type form an important part of his output, combining observational character studies with atmospheric landscape elements.
This example is a cabinet-scale study, notable for its confident handling and strong facial characterisation. The restrained palette and economical brushwork are consistent with Müller’s smaller Orientalist works produced during or after his travels.
Signed lower right “W. Müller”.
Presented in a gilt frame with a multi-line mount.
